Clifford "Kippy" Weigelt, Claverack Town Supervisor
Family, business, and public service – three points that Clifford “Kippy” Weigelt identifies as most important to him.
A lifelong resident of Claverack, Kippy is the son of the late William and Martha (Hess) Weigelt. He has five grown children; Kim, Lisa, Renee, Clifford, and Wayne and ten grandchildren. Kippy’s family dates back to the 1700’s here in Claverack. He resides on land that his family has owned for generations. The soil is rich in family history, memories, and tradition. Kippy’s uncle, the late John Hess, served many years as Claverack Town Supervisor and Chairman of the Columbia County Board of Supervisors. His dedication to public service helped inspire Kippy to run for Claverack Town Councilman back in 2003, a position he has held ever since.
Kippy comes from a family of small business owners and is today one himself. As a young man he worked for his father at the family's bagged soils business, "Swiss Farms". There, Kippy learned the ins and outs of business management. He learned the value of good work ethic, the importance of budgeting and finance management, and perhaps most importantly how to treat customers and employees with respect. Today, Kippy is part-owner and manager of the family business, now known as "Growmax". The business, one of three Kippy has owned, employs approximately 25 local residents.
As a small business owner, Kippy appreciates the impact government can have on a business’ bottom line. High taxes and fees mean less money for the business to pay wages, and less money for investment and expansion. At the same time, he understands the value small businesses bring to the town, in the form of jobs, services, and tax revenue.
During his tenure on the Town Board, Kippy has served as liaison to the Town Highway Department. He has worked hand-in-hand with Town Highway Superintendent Louie LaMont to ensure budgets are adhered to and adequate investments made in machinery and equipment, which minimizes down time and repair costs. He has also supported shared service and equipment arrangements between Claverack Highway and Philmont DPW. Such arrangements are mutually beneficial to both departments and town taxpayers. This is just one area where Kippy's extensive business management experience has benefited our town.
As Councilman, Kippy took part in the development of the town's comprehensive plan. This plan, designed to be a road map for growth and development in the town, took over two years to develop. It was a collaborative process by town officials and many residents that serves today to protect our town's resources and rural character, while at the same time providing a foundation for growth.
Kippy Weigelt is a proven leader with a record of accomplishment. As your Town Supervisor, he works for all town residents – which include the good people of Philmont. He fights for families, businesses, and public service groups. He fights to ensure Claverack’s future is bright and opportunities plentiful, like they were when he grew up here.
